Photos: My experience at Felabration 2015

This year's Felabration event, I was not ready to miss any of the action, come shine or highwater, more so it's happening right in my backyard, so how will I explain it if some people can travel in from Outside the country and other states to come to Felabration while I find excuses on excuses on why it cant happen. No way!

Fela's shrine is really a shrine, located in Agidingbi, Ikeja, a central location right in the heart of Lagos. It is a Mecca of some sorts to different people. However, to so many, If you have never been to the Afrikan shrine, old or new, your education is not complete. Also, if You have never ever listened to Fela's  afrobeat music ,you must be living in another era. Nigerians and Foreigners are so in love with Fela Anikulapo Kuti, his music, message  and all he represents minus the women and drugs. I followed the progress of this year's Felabration on social media,  joined in the conversation on twitter, even blogged about it but to visit African shrine especially when Femi is performing an itch I had to satisfy, as least to feed my curiosity and not to rely on hearsay  alone. Otherwise, when some of my friends who have never missed Felabration starts giving me rave reviews, I may wondering and pondering what the whole hype is about.

On the second to the last day, I finally pleaded with a friend to partake in my adventure and off we were to Afrikan shrine. To my utmost surprise, all the nearby streets were lined with different vehicles of various sizes, shapes and colours, Na Exotic ones even plenty past. There were uniformed security men, police forces, civil defence , guards and volunteers who were there to direct human and vehicular traffic. We heard incessant shouts of  "No waiting, keep moving, form a straight line, Be on the  queue or  get on the move".  The  Street was streaming with crowds, most on queues waiting to get in, there were shops, stalls lined up  with various vendors peddling their wares, sweets, drinks, Fela's memorabilia, food, and more. Needless to say I had to part with some money to gain entrance past the beefy security men and avoid the long queues. Once inside, we could hear the beats and sounds of the music, people dancing, smoking and just enjoying the atmosphere of Felabration. For each step we took, we had to be extra careful not to literally step on toes, the crowd was so much. As early as 2pm,guests have started arriving to witness the artistes performances, by evening the crowd has grown to fill the 1000 hall standing capacity, even overflowing outside. Those outside were more than the the lucky ones inside who were able to gain entrance. Though some had to leave due to the stiffing heat, aching legs from several hours of standing and take a  fresh breath outside the arena, but  there were tens ready to replace them, that you hardly realize the difference.
It was business time for some individuals, those who charge for parking, for making available a seat at the VIP section, food and drink vendors. After spending several minutes, we had to leave as the second hand inhaling of smoke was already getting to me,So we  found our way out to the streets again, strolled into one of the stalls , In fact it was the best decision, as we sat down comfortably, mingled and trade banters with other Fela's fans, enjoyed the artistes performance which can be clearly heard within 5 mile radius of the shrine. One devotee who I became acquainted with and from our conversation, I  deduced he never missed a day of  Felabration and was constantly at the shrine throughout the period of events informed  that  He is yet to meet another great Nigerian musician whose influence on the populace's  language, culture and moral outlook is as far-reaching as Fela's. I totally agree with him. 16 years after, a legend is being celebrated and many Kudos to those who  work tirelessly to uphold his legacies.
Felabration 2015  was really an eye opening experience.
